Aromatic Use Of Essential Oils

As explained earlier, essential oils work on an  emotional level, so simply smelling the oils can change your physiologic, mental and emotional responses. Essential oils can be  stimulating or invigorating , whilst others may be  calming and soothing, but depending on the essential oil being used, it can also be used to create a pleasant atmosphere, cleansing the air  and clinical evidence has suggested it can also improve productivity.

The first and simplest way, is  simply by opening the bottle and smelling the essential oil directly, alternatively you could place a drop on a tissue and smell the tissue as required.

Another easy way to use them, is by placing one drop of essential oil in the palm of your hands, gently rub your hands together and then take a slow deep breath several times.  Be careful not to place your hands too close to your eyes, as you do not want the oil getting into them.   This is a great way to use oils to support respiratory issues  before exercise, as it can open up the airways and allow you to take longer deeper breaths.  A great oil to use for this is peppermint essential oil.

My favourite way of using essential oils aromatically is by diffusing them, using a diffuser .  You simply add water to the diffuser and add 2-5 drops of essential oil to it.  The diffuser works by breaking the essential oils into tiny molecules, which are then dispersed in the atmosphere.   You can either use single oil or make your own personal blend of oils to diffuse.

If you don’t have a diffuser don’t worry, you can simply fill a small water bottle up with water and add approximately 10-15 drops to 100 ml water bottle and shake it each time before spraying into the atmosphere.  This is also a great way to use the essential oils in the work place.

Other aromatic uses include: –

  • Placing a couple of drops on a cotton ball and placing in an air vent or fan
  • Adding to laundry detergent or dryer sheets / balls (I’ve made my own tumble dryer balls with natural wool)
  • Spritzing clothing, bedding, carpets and curtains.

Take care for now,
