Topical Use Of Essential Oils

Essential oils are easily absorbed into the skin  and are safe to be applied topically.  Remember essential oils are extremely potent and  one drop can service every cell in your body , so less is best.

When using topically you need to consider the age, size and overall health of the person and use the correct dosage for that person. I recommend using a small amount more frequently rather than a larger amount less often.  I will be sharing more information soon about diluting essential oils.

When using essential oils topically, please make sure you read the label, as this will identify to you whether the oil can be used neat, whether it may cause skin sensitivity or if it needs to be diluted before applying topically.

When using an essential oil for the first time, I recommend that you do a small skin patch test.  Dilute one drop in 5 ml of carrier oil and apply to a non-sensitive area to see if there is any sort of reaction.  If redness or irritation occurs when using essential oils topically, apply a vegetable oil such as fractionated coconut oil or olive oil to the affected area.

An easy way to use essential oils topically is to apply 1-2 drops of essential oils (always dilute for babies and infants) to the base of your feet.    Within 30 seconds, they are absorbed into your bloodstream and then circulated to every cell in your body within 20 minutes.   This is a great way to use the oils for babies and children, as it stops them from getting the oils in their eyes.  I also love using them in this way when I don’t particularly like the smell of the oils or to boost my immune system, especially in winter, by applying a couple of drops on the base of my feet before I go to bed.

You can apply essential oils topically to your forehead, temples, behind your ears, chest, back of neck, abdomen (for digestive discomfort), arms, legs, muscles and joints.

The essential oils can be used singularly or blended together to create a personalised blend during a massage.    Using massage can help to increase circulation and improve distribution of the essential oils throughout the body.

Other topical uses include:-

  • Adding a few drops of essential oils to Epson salts in your bath
  • Making your own body spritzer
  • Adding to a fragrance free moisturiser to personalise your own skin care
  • Making a hot or cold compress and adding the essential oils before placing over the desired area.

Some essential oils are known as  hot oils , these include Cassia, Cinnamon, Clove, Oregano and Thyme.  When using these essential oils topically, I always recommend you  heavily dilute  them to avoid skin irritation.

Other essential oils that  may cause some skin irritation  include Black Pepper, Citrus Oils, Eucalyptus, Fennel, Ginger, Lemongrass, Peppermint and Wintergreen.
